Lineage is the cycle of transmission of knowledge between each successive generation of teacher and student. In this way, the essence of the teachings remain intact, whilst being expanded upon and given fresh meaning by the perspective of each new generation of teacher. It is through lineage that the insights and contributions of earlier teachers are acknowledged and preserved.

James teaches a holistic approach to yoga as taught by his mentor Duncan Hulin, with whom he has studied regularly for the past eighteen years. The lineage originates in the South of India and can be directly traced back Swami Sivananda Paramahamsa. Swamiji taught Bhagawan Nityananda of Ganeshpuri and Dr Pillai of Kerala. Dr Pillai taught Duncan Hulin.

All of these teachers share an approach to yoga which is based upon freedom, egalitarianism and a rejection of dogma and sectarianism. Rather than following a guru, students are encouraged to listen to their own inner guide, wisdom and intuition - to utilise yoga as a tool to realise their potential to live life in a way that is fulfilling and harmonious.

James shares the holistic ethos of the lineage and endeavours to offer the yoga teachings in the same spirit as they were shown to him.
