Lineage or ‘Paramparā’ is an integral thread that runs throughout the history of yoga. It is the cycle of transmission of knowledge between successive generations of teacher & student. In this way, whilst the essence of the teachings remain preserved, they are expanded upon and given fresh meaning by the perspective of each new generation of teacher. It is through lineage that we acknowledge the contributions of our teachers as well as realise our own place within the cycle.
James teaches a holistic approach to yoga as shown to him by his teacher Duncan Hulin and which has evolved through a succession of teachers from the South of India. This lineage can be traced back Swami Sivananda Paramahamsa. Swamiji taught Bhagawan Nityananda of Ganeshpuri and Dr Pillai of Kerala. Dr Pillai taught Duncan Hulin who is James Russell's teacher.
All of these teachers share an approach to yoga based upon freedom, egalitarianism and a rejection of dogma & sectarianism. Rather than following a 'guru' students are encouraged to listen to their own inner guide, wisdom and intuition - to utilise yoga as a tool to realise their potential to live life in a way that is fulfilling and harmonious.
James shares the holistic ethos of the lineage and endeavours to offer the yoga teachings in the same spirit as they were shown to him.
We desire that you live up to your full potential, for only then will you experience both harmony and happiness. Only then will you possess real health, not just freedom from disease.
